Derrick Sims grew up in Kingsland, Arkansas. Three years later, Sims returned to Kingsland, Arkansas to make his directorial-debut with Come Morning (2012). He also wrote, photographed and edited the film. Come Morning (2012) premiered at the 2012 at the Austin Film Festival, and in 2013, the Oxford Film Festival awarded Sims with a special jury award for his cinematography. He and his partner own Fabled Motion Pictures and Fabled Effects House.
